About Us

When the Sam Houston Area Council wanted to expand scouting into the Kingwood area, it approached the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department to start a Fire Explorer Post. The Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department decided to start a Boy Scout Troop first, and BSA Troop 27 was started. Originally chartered in 1989, Troop 27 met weekly at the fire station located on West Lake Houston Parkway near Northpark Drive (the current location of Houston’s Fire Department Station 102). Our first Scoutmaster was James Mitchell, and our first Chartered Organization Representative was Charles Martin (Eagle Scout, Kingwood’s Troop 600, and a former Troop 27 Scoutmaster). Christ the King Lutheran Church took over Troop 27’s charter in 1992 when the City of Houston announced the annexation of Kingwood. Troop 27 now meets in the Youth Chapel at Christ the King Lutheran Church most Monday nights starting at 7:00 PM.

Over the years, Troop 27 has always tried to achieve that intimate small town feeling where the troop is a family. In Troop 27 young men grow and develop their leadership skills as they travel the scouting path. Although we may be a small troop, our scouting program is comparable to that of much larger troops.

Troop 27 is a boy led troop. Our scouting program follows the BSA model. We hold elections twice a year, offering Scouts the opportunity to lead and manage the Troop (with trained adult supervision). The youth leadership works on an annual calendar of events each August (includes monthly campouts), and the troop meets actively during the year (including summer months which are reserved for extended camping programs). Throughout the year, Scouts will work on scout skills, merit badges, and leadership at our weekly meetings. Troop 27 attends both summer and winter camps. We have traveled to Arkansas, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and throughout Texas to attend scout council summer camps. Winter camp is held every January over the MLK weekend with Troop 9 (Humble), and Troop 839 (Kingwood).

As a boy led troop, we trained our Scouts for leadership. All Troop 27 Scouts participate in ILST. Many continued their training at NYLT, and some have also completed NAYLE.

Advancement is an integral part of our yearly program, and Troop 27 offers a program that allows the scout to earn his First Class Scout rank usually within a year of joining the Troop. Upon completion of First Class Scout rank, the Troop rewards the Scout with his own tent to use at our campouts.

We also offer special programs that our Scouts can participate in, including Order of the Arrow (Honor Society of Scouts), the Cub Scout Den Chief Program, and High Adventure camps. We have attended Kingwood Park's Troop FFA, the University of Houston’s Odd-Ball Merit Badge Day, Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Open House, Scouts at Sam Houston University, Philmont Scout Ranch and Training Center, Sea Base, BSA National Jamborees, and NOAC. Troop 27 participates annually in a number of community based service projects, including those developed by our Eagle Scout candidates. To date, 89 of our scouts have achieved their Eagle Scout rank in our program.

Bark Mulch Sales is our main annual fundraiser, and it is held in conjunction with Troops 8 and 839 (both from Kingwood) during the first quarter of each calendar year.

Troop 27 offers a well-rounded and complete program for your son. We welcome you to pay us a visit and experience what we have to offer you.
